Frequently Asked Questions
Learn more about key insurance terms and coverage information
  • Why should I buy travel insurance?
Travel insurance helps protect you from unexpected medical emergencies. With GreenShield Travel Insurance, you also get the reassurance of trusted support—from clear guidance in those stressful moments to help coordinating care or accessing essential services while you’re away. Where possible, our partner CanAssistance can also arrange to pay eligible emergency medical expenses directly to the provider, helping reduce your out-of-pocket costs.
  • Can I extend my coverage if my trip is longer than expected?
Yes. If your plans change before you leave your province or territory of residence, you can apply to extend your coverage. Extensions are completed by purchasing one of our Top Up plans for the additional days you need. If you’d like help choosing the right option, your Advisor can guide you. If you’re already travelling, refer to your policy for eligibility and next steps.
  • How do I make a claim?
You’ll find step-by-step instructions and a list of required documents on the CanAssistance website.
    Assistance Centre contact numbers:
    • 1-800-936-6226 (toll-free from Canada and the U.S.)
    • 519-742-3556 (collect from other countries)
  • What is the difference between a single trip and a multi-trip travel insurance plan?
A Multi-trip annual plan provides coverage for multiple separate individual trips during the period of coverage. Coverage on each trip is for up to the number of days you purchased, as indicated on your policy confirmation.

A Single-trip plan provides coverage for one trip based on the number of days for which you purchased coverage, as indicated on your policy confirmation.

  • What’s the difference between a Single Trip plan and a Multi Trip plan?
A Multi Trip plan covers multiple separate trips during your policy period, with each trip insured for up to the number of days you purchased (17 or 31 days). A Single Trip plan covers one trip for the number of days shown on your policy confirmation.
  • What isn’t covered by my travel plan?
Exclusions vary by plan but may include things like non-emergency care, routine or elective procedures, and conditions that were pre-existent before your departure. Always review your policy for full details.
  • Can I purchase Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, and Baggage Loss coverage on its own?
No. Trip Cancellation, Interruption, and Baggage coverage is bundled together and can be added to your Single Trip plan at the time of purchase, but this coverage isn’t available on its own as a standalone plan.
  • Does my provincial health plan cover me while travelling?
Only partially. Provincial health plans cover a limited portion of out-of-province medical expenses. Travel insurance helps protect you from the remaining costs — including emergency care, hospital services, and other unexpected needs while you’re away.
Please note: You must also be covered by a Canadian Government Health Insurance Plan (GHIP) for your entire trip and coverage period.
  • How far in advance should I buy travel insurance?
You can purchase a plan up to nine months before your departure date. You must be in your province or territory of residence when you buy your coverage.
  • Is COVID-19 covered under travel insurance?
Yes. COVID-19 coverage is included in our plans unless you’re travelling to an area with a Government of Canada advisory related to COVID-19. Coverage details vary by plan, so always check your policy to see what applies to your trip.
